Avocados and the Mexican connection

Avocados are now a global phenomenon. Every year, the demand for this nutritious fruit continues to increase; and this has been the trend for the past 15 years. More than a billion pounds of the fruit is consumed in the United States each year. Now, the love for avocados has spread far and wide. For example, people in Japan consume them in the fried form, or with Sushi. Industry sources say that certain marketing campaigns would now be designed specifically for Japan and China.

Large quantities of avocados come from Mexico, which is the leading exporter of avocados in the world. Most of them are harvested in Michoacan state and the overall production of avocados in Mexico generates around $800 million dollars annually. They are mainly exported to United States, Germany and Japan. The latest emerging market for them is China, although many people in this country are still unfamiliar with the fruit. Avocado is used in this part of the world in soups or in juices. In recent times, the second largest importer of this Mexican delight is Japan.

Health benefits associated with avocados have been the key to its widespread consumption. Several studies conducted in the past few years have revealed that this fruit contains monounsaturated fat, which is of the good kind. Chefs who use them regularly in their kitchens are of the opinion that it is creamy as well as mild. This is the reason why most of the Americans reach out for it at the grocery stores. Many of the eateries use this fruit in sandwiches, despite zprices averaging $1 per avocado in the wholesale market.

Avocado recipes have also become increasingly popular. The number of searches made online for recipes with this Mexican fruit is on the rise as avocados get used in a plethora of dishes: sandwiches, salads, and soups. The popularity of avocados has increased to such an extent that famous fast-food chains are using them in their ad campaigns and product launches to boost sales. Some of the popular magazines also feature regular articles about the health benefits of avocados.

The large scale consumption of avocados in United States, particularly of the Hass variety, can be attributed to the loosening of import restrictions put on Mexico. Earlier, California was a major supplier of the fruit, but this region could not grow them throughout the year. Towards the end of the twentieth century, restrictions on its shipment put on Mexico were lifted gradually. As a result, the percentage of avocados imported by United States from abroad increased. Today, Mexico has complete access to the massive US market. The Hass avocado has already gone mainstream, thanks to a large population of Hispanic people of Mexican origin living in the United States who contributed to the popularity of Mexican cuisine in the country.
